Sitharathai, known botanically as Alpinia officinarum or Alpinia galanga, is an aromatic and highly valuable herb in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic medicine. In English, it is commonly referred to as Galangal or Siamese Ginger.
Sitharathai belongs to the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). The rhizome (underground stem) of the plant is the primary part used for medicinal purposes. It has a pungent and bitter taste. Dried pieces of Sitharathai are readily available in traditional medicine shops.
